Engines for wide-body dump truck


Wide-body dump truck has developed rapidly in China in the recent years butthematching engines are usually enginesfor general trucks, showing lots of non-adaptive issues.

Since 2008, focusing on wide-body dump trucks’application and working environment, Weichai made a lot of optimization according to the vehicle structure, power matching requirements, engine performanceand the structure, such as the ribbed structure, WPM electric dust filter, special fuel-water separator, two-stage oil pump and high flow oil filters, and then finallylaunchedthe unique engines for wide-body dumps.

From 2011 to 2012, aiming at some new problems and needs from the market, Weichai carried out further product improvement and development and launchedwide-body dump truck power covering diesel engines and gas engines.

  Wide-body dump truck operating conditions

  The work area is usually the open pit, with lot of dust and heat which are difficult to disperse.

  The environment is complex, which always involvesextreme high temperature, extreme low temperature andextreme high altitude.

  Lots of dust containing metal powder.

  Lots of ramps andcurves, steep slope, poor road conditionsand high vehicle vibration.

  The general operating conditions can be divided into: wait for loading - overloading uphill –Load-off–empty-loading downhill

  3km-5km Transport distance is relatively short.The one-way distance is generally 3km-5km.

  Application: transport of soil residue and a small amount of metallic minerals.

  Engine operating conditions

  Corresponding to the vehicle operating conditions, the engine operating conditions can be divided into: idle speed - high speed - idle speed - high speed.

  Main conditions are idle speed and high-speed (1800rpm-2200rpm).

  Require large reserved torque to meet overloading uphill and bumpy road conditions.

  Operating characteristics of wide-body dump truck

  Long idle speed time and high speed time

  Requirements: great idle and high speed performance (noise, vibration, fuel consumption, etc.)

  High load and lots of ramps

  Requirements: large reserved torqueand wide maximum torque speed area.

  High using frequency

  Requirements: extremely high reliability and timely service

  Continuous increase of the open mines.

  Mining operation increasingly seeks efficiency.

  Strict control of mining explosives.

  Increase in labor costs.

Wide-body dump trucks gradually replace ordinary dump trucks used in minesand are mainly used for transport of soil residue.

The loading of wide-body dump trucksis growing, so the traditionalmechanical transmission will no longer be suitable for models over 50 tons.Instead, hydraulic and electric mode will be applied more and more.

  Configuration features of engines for wide-body dump trucks

  Engines with large displacement, low speed and high torque

  Wide-body dump trucks require engines to havelow failure rate, large reserved torque, large displacement, high reliability, large torque and strong power performance.

  Three-point support and automatic tensioning structure

  Effectively reduce the impact to the enginecause by the twist of the vehicle frame.

  An even more reliableframe support is currently being verified.

  Special fuel-water separator

  Fuel waxing problemin the high altitude area which resultsin difficultyof starting or flameoutafter starting is solved.

  High failure rate of the gear caused by starter dragging the exhaust air during getting off the assembling line or during maintenance is solved.

  Tedious manual oil pumpingwork to get the air out exhaust is now replaced.

  Two-stage oil pump

  Oil sump rear end oil suction pipe is added to avoid no-oil suction from happeningduring the uphill or downhill.

  H-type crankshaft oil passages

  Increase the numbers of the crankshaft oil holes to increase the oil supplyto the crankshaft bearing during engine operation to achieve better lubrication.

  Large-flow oil filter

  Increase the flow of the oil filter toimprovethe oil filter efficiency.

  Dual transverse structure will avoid crashing the bottom of the filter.

  WPM electronic dust filter

  Electronic dust filter structure: the pre-filtration rotator isdirectly driven by the motor to improve air filtrationefficiency underlowspeed.

  WEVB exhaust brake

  Efficient braking - efficiency is raised by 55% or morethan thetraditional butterfly valve exhaust braking.

  Reduce wearof the vehicle brake system.

  Effectively reduce braking times, as well asthe operator’s work intensity.

  Fuel supply can be cut off during the WEVB braking process to save more fuel.
